Korea is a seafood lover’s paradise, yet one delicacy remains curiously elusive: the rich, buttery bliss of fresh sea urchin, or uni. My quest to find it led me to Okcheon Hoetjip in Busan, a famed fish house that promises an authentic taste of the ocean’s treasure. I knew I had to experience it for myself. Join me as I dive into a review of my meal at this iconic spot and share everything you need to know before you go.
About Okcheon Hoetjip
Okcheon Hoetjip (옥천횟집)—or Okcheon Raw Fish House—is a beloved local seafood spot hidden in Yeong-do’s Jungni Raw Fish Village, not far from the popular Huinnyeoul Culture Village. This is where you come for an unpretentious, authentic taste of the sea. The setting is pure, casual pocha charm, but the real luxury here is the combination of flawlessly fresh seafood and a breathtaking ocean view, offering a classic Busan dining experience without the fuss.

The Star of the Show: Sea Urchin Kimbap
My entire journey to Okcheon Hoetjip was driven by one specific quest: finding exceptional sea urchin roe, or Uni, in Korea. Luckily, the star dish and specialty of this Hoetjip (raw fish restaurant) is the very thing I was searching for!
While they offer a full menu of fresh seafood—including Hoe (raw fish) platters, Seafood Ramen (해물라면), and the mixed Haemul Modum—the undisputed champion here is the Seongge Kimbap (성게김밥), or Sea Urchin Kimbap.
The moment the platter arrived, I knew I had made the right pilgrimage.

The plump rolls of kimbap, neatly wrapped in dark seaweed (gim), are practically hidden beneath a generous, rich, golden mound of fresh uni.
That first bite was a revelation—an explosion of the sea that was creamy, slightly sweet, and intensely savory. The buttery richness of the sea urchin perfectly complemented the fresh crunch of the vegetables and seasoned rice inside the roll.
A View Worth the Trip
While the seafood is the star, the setting is the showstopper. We were lucky enough to be seated on the terrace, facing a picture-perfect panorama of the open ocean, a rugged breakwater, and a charming red lighthouse in the distance.

Our visit in early December came with a crisp chill, but the restaurant had thoughtfully enclosed the terrace with clear plastic screens and provided heaters, creating a cozy, wind-proof cocoon. Bundled up in the golden winter sunlight, with the sea sparkling just beyond our table, the atmosphere was nothing short of magical.

Traveler’s Tip: If you visit in warmer months, imagine this same scene with the screens rolled up, offering an unobstructed, breezy, al fresco dining experience right over the water.
