Guides + Tips Japan Winter in Japan

Snow, Steaks, and Serenity: My Magical Visit to ao LAKESIDE CAFE

My first international trip of 2026 to Japan has just come to an end, and my heart is overflowing with fond experiences. While this journey centered around snowboarding in Nagano’s beloved Hakuba Village, one particular visit became the undisputed highlight: dining at ao LAKESIDE CAFE.

If you are heading to Nagano, you’ll want to bookmark this spot. Here is my firsthand experience and some tips to help you enjoy this lakeside gem to the fullest!

About ao LAKESIDE CAFE

Opened in the summer of 2024, ao LAKESIDE CAFE was born from a simple, beautiful mission: to create a space where people can relax and soak in the world-class views of the Hakuba foothills while enjoying exceptional food.

Located on the shores of Lake Aoki, the cafe sits beside one of the clearest lakes in Japan. Because the lake has no inflowing rivers and is fed entirely by Northern Alps spring water, it acts like a massive mirror. On calm mornings, it reflects the snow-capped peaks perfectly. The cafe itself is produced by Tysons & Company—the team behind Tokyo’s famous T.Y.HARBOR—bringing that same high-end, waterfront dining expertise to the mountains of Nagano.

A Wintry Fairytale Through Glass

I visited on February 17th, the prime time for Hakuba’s famous winter. The scene I witnessed was something I’ll never forget: stark white powdery snow, rippling blue water, and a layered mountainous backdrop.

The cafe’s design is ingenious; three sides of the structure are floor-to-ceiling glass. This “transparent” architecture makes you feel like you are sitting right on the water’s edge, even while tucked away in the warmth. While winter offers a tranquil, snowy escape, the cafe is designed for all seasons—from the “three-tiered autumn leaves” in the fall to the bustling water activities in the summer.

Things to Know Before You Go

Be Mindful of the Wait: For a cafe this stunning, popularity is inevitable. It’s a social media darling, which is actually how I first discovered it! We arrived around 4:00 PM, and the queue was quite long. Since it functions as an all-day dining hub and regional revitalization center, it attracts a steady crowd.

The Outdoor Terrace is Slippery: While there is no organized seating outside during the winter, the cafe keeps the terrace open for photos and a closer look at Lake Aoki. Please be careful! The area can be incredibly icy. I saw many people slip and fall during my visit, so watch your step.

Getting There: Reaching the cafe via public transport can be a bit of a challenge. The most convenient way is to take a train to JR Yanaba Station and then grab a taxi for the short remainder of the trip. If you are driving, they have a spacious parking lot reserved exclusively for customers located just across the road.

Dining In: Highly Recommended

We initially planned a quick stop, but after seeing the menu featuring seasonal Shinshu ingredients, we stayed for a full dinner. It was a delicious decision!

“ao” Original Hamburger (2,380 Yen): Hearty, juicy, and exactly what you need after a day on the slopes.

Shinsyu Beef Rump Steak (3,300 Yen): This was the standout. The medium-rare steak was incredibly tender and flavorful. It’s a true taste of the region.

Hot Chocolate: Don’t leave without trying this! It is pure magic on a cold February day.

Final Verdict

ao LAKESIDE CAFE is more than just a place to eat; it’s a “park-like” sanctuary that truly captures the evolving spirit of the Hakuba resort area. Whether you’re there for the spring greenery, the summer cycling, or the winter stillness, it’s a place that washes away the fatigue of daily life. Between the T.Y.HARBOR-level service and the breathtaking mirror-like views of Lake Aoki, it is a 10/10 experience.
