Autumn in Korea Guides + Tips

Finding the Last Autumn Glow: A Late-Fall Visit to Seoul’s Bongeunsa Temple

Bongeunsa Temple has long been my favorite healing spot in Seoul. Yet, despite countless visits, I only recently discovered its magic in autumn. My December trip revealed a secret: it’s a perfect destination for the city’s very last fall foliage. If you’re seeking those final, brilliant colors, Bongeunsa should be high on your list. Here, I’m sharing the beauty I captured, along with some tips to plan your own perfect visit.

About Bongeunsa

Bongeunsa Temple is a serene sanctuary nestled in the heart of modern Gangnam, Seoul. Established over a millennium ago, this historic Buddhist temple offers a peaceful escape from the city’s skyscrapers, where the scent of incense, the sound of chanting, and the sight of ancient pagodas create an atmosphere of profound tranquility. Whether you’re seeking spiritual reflection, cultural insight, or simply a moment of quiet, Bongeunsa is a beautiful bridge between Korea’s rich past and its vibrant present.

Autumn Sights Spotted on Bongeunsa’s Grounds

While the temple’s elegant pavilions and lanterns are beautiful year-round, autumn weaves a special kind of magic. Here are the key locations where the fall colors truly shine within the temple walls.

1. Memorial Stone (Gongdeokbi)

Your autumn journey begins immediately. As you pass through Jinyeomun, the main gate, look to the uphill path on your right. Here, the vibrant red maple tree framing the solemn Memorial Stone creates a breathtaking first impression. When at its peak, the fiery canopy is so magnificent it becomes the undeniable focal point, beautifully blending nature with sacred history.

2. Trail Behind Daeunjeon Hall

The Daeunjeon Hall, the main prayer hall, is the temple’s spiritual heart. On either side of it, you’ll find concrete staircases leading up to a quiet dirt trail. This path is where autumn truly dances. A cluster of deciduous trees lines the mountainside here, creating a gorgeous tunnel of gold, amber, and crimson during the peak season. It’s a perfect, serene escape just minutes from the main courtyard.

3. Mireuk Daebul (The Giant Buddha Statue)

Following the trail behind Daeunjeon Hall leads you to one of Bongeunsa’s most iconic sights: the majestic Mireuk Big Buddha Statue. The view here is a stunning study in contrast. Don’t just stop at the statue—explore the slope behind it. You’ll be rewarded with a panoramic vista where the serene Buddha gazes out over the ancient temple roofs, directly toward the modern towers of COEX and the Gangnam skyline. In late autumn, the fall colors in the foreground add a warm layer to this incredible scene.

4. The Temple Parking Lot

Don’t rush past the practical spaces! The temple parking lot area is dotted with strategically planted maple trees. These trees, often at the perfect height, offer some of the easiest and most photogenic close-ups of brilliant red leaves, proving that beauty here is woven into every corner.

When is the Best Time to Visit?

Based on my observation, the foliage within Bongeunsa seems to reach its peak very late compared to other famous spots in Seoul. If you’re hoping to see the stunning golden and red hues featured in this post, plan your visit for late November through the first week of December. My visit was on December 1st, and the colors were at an absolute, breathtaking peak.

Pro Tips for Your Visit

Chase the Golden Hour: For the most magical light, visit in the late afternoon. The setting sun washes the autumn leaves in a warm, glowing light, making the colors truly luminous and perfect for photography.

Dress for the Season: December in Korea is cold. Dress in warm, layered clothing, and pack extra hand and foot warmers. The temple grounds involve walking and some gentle uphill paths.

Respect the Space: Remember this is an active place of worship. Speak softly, dress modestly, and be mindful when taking photographs, especially indoors or during ceremonies.

How to Get to Bongeunsa Temple

It could not be easier. Take Seoul Subway Line 9 (the Gold Line) and get off at Bongeunsa Station. The temple is located right outside Exit 1.

Final Verdict

Bongeunsa Temple has always been a healing escape, but discovering its late-autumn persona has deepened my love for it. It offers a unique opportunity to extend the fall season, wrapping ancient tranquility in a final, spectacular blaze of color. If you’re looking for a serene yet stunning spot to experience Seoul’s last fall foliage—away from the earlier crowds of Nami Island or N Seoul Tower—Bongeunsa in late November or early December is an absolute must-visit.

It’s more than a sightseeing stop; it’s a peaceful, poignant farewell to autumn in the city.
