In this post, I am going to introduce you to one of the most unique Buddhist temples I have ever visited in Korea, Anmyeonam. It was less than a twenty-minute drive from the Travel Break Coffee located on Anmyeon island of Taean-gun. My friends and I visited the temple in late summer which was considered to be one of the best seasons to explore the county.

Anmyeonam temple is situated on the east sea where the picturesque scenery of a sunrise is admired. The temple has two main complexes, one established onshore and the other floating prominently offshore. The first structure for you to see upon arrival is the three-story chapel facing towards the sea and the view of a floating pagoda wobbling in the middle of the Fox island (여우섬) and Jogunul island (조구널섬) would manifest right before your eyes. Next to the chapel there is a well established 7-tiered grand pagoda and standing next to it would make you realize how tiny you really are. Strolling further you will find that there are numbers of unique marble statues scattering all around the place.

To reach the second part of the temple which is the floating pagoda on the sea surface that is spotted earlier from the high ground, you need to walk down to sea and cross  the wooden walkway straightening half-way before the wobbling pagoda. This wooden passage is attached to plastic barrels and buoys to keep it afloat at high-tide. As the tide comes through, don’t forget to hold tight onto the ropes. When reaching the end of this pontoon bridge, you can only go further to the islands if it is during a low tide by walking. So, admiring the wonderful sight of the floating pagoda and the islands from afar was the only option we had because the tide was way higher from the seabed. We gave up and had to postpone our exploration of this second area of the Anmyeonam Temple until the next time we again made a plan to visit Taean.
