A little autumn escape in Seoul that feels worlds away from the city.
When you think of autumn in Seoul, places like Gyeongbokgung Palace, Seokchon Lake, and Namsan probably come to mind first. But tucked away in the northeastern part of the city, in Nowon-gu, there’s a beautiful little escape that deserves a spot on your autumn bucket list: Gyeongchun Forest Park.
Imagine walking along an old railway trail, surrounded by golden ginkgo trees, warm autumn foliage, charming pathways, and the occasional glimpse of Seoul’s everyday neighborhood life. It’s peaceful, nostalgic, and wonderfully photogenic.
Unlike some of Seoul’s more famous autumn destinations, Gyeongchun Forest Park has a much more laid-back atmosphere. You don’t need a packed itinerary here. Just bring your camera, put on your comfiest walking shoes, and let yourself enjoy a slow afternoon beneath the autumn trees.
If you’re looking for a less-crowded autumn spot in Seoul, this might just be your next favorite discovery.
A Little History Behind Gyeongchun Forest Park
Before becoming one of Nowon’s loveliest green spaces, Gyeongchun Forest Park (경춘선숲길) was actually part of the old Gyeongchun railway line.
The railway once connected Seoul with Chuncheon in Gangwon Province, carrying passengers through beautiful countryside landscapes. After the railway route was relocated, the old railway tracks and surrounding areas were transformed into a public green space.

Today, the former railway corridor has been given a new life as Gyeongchun Line Forest Trail, or Gyeongchun Forest Park.
What makes this place especially charming is how much of its railway history remains. You can still find traces of the old railway, including sections of the original tracks, railway-themed spaces, and historic station surroundings.
It’s a lovely combination of nature, history, and urban life — a reminder that even an old railway can become something beautiful again.
When to Catch Gyeongchun Forest Park at Its Autumn Peak
Wondering when is the best time to visit Gyeongchun Forest Park for autumn foliage? Here’s my little tip based on my own visit!
I visited on November 2nd, and all the photos featured in this post were taken on that day. The timing was already beautiful! Many of the ginkgo and maple trees were at their prime, showing off their gorgeous golden-yellow and vibrant red colours.

However, I noticed that quite a few of the other deciduous trees lining the old railway tracks were still changing colours and had yet to reach their full autumn glory.
Seeing how the different trees were transitioning at slightly different times, I’d actually recommend visiting during the second week of November if you want to catch the park at its most colourful.
By then, hopefully, more of the trees along the railway trail will have reached their peak, creating an even more beautiful autumn landscape.
Of course, autumn foliage timing can vary from year to year depending on temperatures and weather conditions, so it’s always worth keeping an eye on the seasonal changes before your visit.
My recommendation: Aim for November 8–15 for the best chance of enjoying the full autumn colours at Gyeongchun Forest Park.
Autumn Strolling Along the Old Railway Trail
The best way to experience Gyeongchun Forest Park is simply to walk.
The trail stretches through several neighborhoods, offering a lovely change of scenery along the way. One moment you’re walking beneath a canopy of trees, and the next you’re passing quiet residential streets, little cafés, and charming corners that feel completely removed from Seoul’s busy downtown.

During autumn, the entire atmosphere becomes even more magical.
The trees gradually turn shades of yellow, orange, and warm brown, while fallen leaves scatter across the pathways. The sunlight filtering through the branches creates the prettiest golden glow, especially on a clear afternoon.
There’s something particularly special about walking along a former railway line during this season. The long, linear pathways make the scenery feel almost cinematic, and every few steps seem to offer another lovely photo opportunity.
It’s not necessarily a place where you need to rush from one attraction to another. In fact, I’d say the best thing to do here is slow down, take your time, and enjoy the little details.
The Golden Autumn Scenery
If there’s one thing that makes Gyeongchun Forest Park worth visiting in autumn, it’s the beautiful foliage.
The park offers a different kind of autumn scenery compared with Seoul’s grand palaces or mountain viewpoints. Instead of dramatic architecture or panoramic city views, you’ll find a more intimate kind of beauty.

Golden leaves hanging over the pathways, colourful trees lining the old railway route, and little pockets of sunshine illuminating the forest floor.
It’s the kind of scenery that makes you want to stop every few minutes to take another picture.
I especially love how the natural landscape blends into the surrounding neighborhood. It doesn’t feel like a typical tourist attraction. Instead, it feels like discovering a beautiful local walking trail that Seoul residents get to enjoy throughout the seasons.
And perhaps that’s exactly what makes it so lovely.
A Lovely Spot for Autumn Photography
For anyone who enjoys photography, Gyeongchun Forest Park is definitely worth bringing your camera to.
The combination of railway elements, tree-lined paths, and colourful foliage gives you plenty of interesting compositions.
A few ideas for your photo collection:
- The tree-lined pathways: Capture the beautiful golden foliage stretching along the walking trail.
- Autumn leaves on the ground: Look for little details of fallen leaves and warm afternoon sunlight.
- The old railway elements: Include the historic tracks and railway structures for a nostalgic touch.
- Candid walking shots: Sometimes the simplest photos of someone strolling beneath the trees turn out to be the prettiest.
- Wide landscape shots: Show the contrast between the peaceful green corridor and the surrounding urban neighborhood.
My favourite kind of autumn photography is always the natural, unposed kind — a little sunlight, a beautiful background, and a moment that captures the feeling of the season.
Make It a Slow Autumn Afternoon in Nowon
One of the nicest things about visiting Gyeongchun Forest Park is that you don’t need to plan an entire day around it.
You can easily turn your visit into a relaxed afternoon exploring Nowon.

Start with a leisurely walk along the forest trail, take a few photographs, and enjoy the autumn scenery before finding a nearby café for a warm drink.
There’s something about having a cup of coffee after a long autumn walk that makes the whole experience even better.
And if you have a little extra time, explore the surrounding neighborhood. You might discover small local cafés, bakeries, and little streets that you wouldn’t normally come across on a typical Seoul sightseeing itinerary.
That’s one of my favourite ways to explore Korea — leaving a little room for spontaneous discoveries rather than planning every single minute.

A Little Autumn Escape Worth Discovering
Seoul has no shortage of beautiful autumn destinations, but sometimes the most memorable places are the ones hiding a little further away from the usual tourist routes.
Gyeongchun Forest Park is one of those places.
It’s not about grand landmarks, famous attractions, or an itinerary packed with activities. It’s about enjoying a peaceful walk, admiring the changing leaves, discovering a little piece of railway history, and appreciating the simple beauty of autumn in Seoul.

So, if you’ve already visited the famous autumn spots and are looking for somewhere a little different this season, add Gyeongchun Forest Park in Nowon to your list.
Sometimes, all you need is a quiet trail, golden leaves, and a little time to slow down.
Here’s to finding more beautiful little corners of Korea, one autumn walk at a time 🍂
