As the vibrant hues of spring flowers fade away, the arrival of May brings with it the unmistakable charm of blooming roses. In Korea, May is affectionately known as the season of roses, and it’s easy to see why. From mid-May onwards, the cityscape transforms as rambling roses cascade over fences and walls, painting residential areas with bursts of color. It’s a sight that never fails to captivate, marking the transition from spring to summer in the most beautiful way.

If you’re a rose enthusiast or simply someone who appreciates natural beauty, Seoul offers several spots to immerse yourself in the splendor of roses. Among the most popular are Jungnang Rose Park’s Rose Road (장미길), Cheonho Dong Rose Village (천호동장미마을), and the Olympic Park Rose Plaza (올림픽공원장미광장). While I’ve yet to visit the first two, I recently had the pleasure of exploring the Olympic Park Rose Plaza, and it was nothing short of magical.
A Floral Wonderland at Olympic Park Rose Plaza
Located in the southeast corner of Seoul’s sprawling Olympic Park, the Rose Plaza is a haven for rose lovers. Conveniently situated near Exit 3 of Olympic Park Station (Seoul Subway Line 5), this enchanting garden is home to over 150 varieties of roses. From classic reds and pinks to rare hues I didn’t even know existed, the plaza is a kaleidoscope of colors and fragrances.

During my visit, the weather was absolutely perfect—sunny with a crystal-clear blue sky. It was the kind of day that makes you want to spend hours outdoors, soaking in the beauty of nature. However, I made the rookie mistake of wearing shorts and underestimating the strength of the sun. Even weeks later, the uneven tan lines on my legs serve as a humorous reminder of that day!
Why You Should Visit
The Olympic Park Rose Plaza is more than just a garden; it’s an experience. Walking through the plaza, you’re surrounded by meticulously arranged rose beds, each variety more stunning than the last. The sheer diversity of roses is awe-inspiring, and it’s impossible not to feel a sense of wonder as you take it all in.

But the beauty of Olympic Park doesn’t end at the Rose Plaza. The park itself is a sprawling oasis in the heart of the city, offering plenty of activities and sights to explore. Whether you’re strolling along the walking paths, visiting the iconic Soma Museum of Art, or simply relaxing on the grass, there’s something for everyone.
How to Get There
Getting to the Olympic Park Rose Plaza is a breeze. Simply take Seoul Subway Line 5 (the purple line) and get off at Olympic Park Station (올림픽공원역). From Exit 3, walk straight for about 500 meters, and you’ll find the Rose Plaza on your right. It’s a short and pleasant walk, setting the tone for the beauty that awaits.

Final Thoughts
If you find yourself in Seoul during May, do yourself a favor and add the Olympic Park Rose Plaza to your itinerary. It’s a place where nature’s artistry takes center stage, offering a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Whether you’re a seasoned rose enthusiast or simply someone who enjoys a good photo op, this floral paradise is sure to leave you enchanted.
So grab your camera, don’t forget the sunscreen (learn from my mistake!), and get ready to be swept away by the timeless beauty of roses. Trust me, it’s an experience you won’t soon forget.
