Sharosugil Foodie Guide: Gogi-Gupneun-Saramdeul (고기굽는사람들)

Situated right in the middle of Sharosugil (샤로수길), the hip street located nearby SNU main gate, gogi-gupneun-saramdeul (고기굽는사람들) is my favorite place when my body craves for a good yangnyeom dwaeji galbi (양념돼지갈비) – meaning marinated pork short rib, which is one of the most representative forms of meat dish prepared for Korean barbeque. In this article, we will delve into why Gogi-gupneun-saramdeul is my top pick for a fantastic barbecue experience in Sharosu-gil.

    What’s in Yangnyeom Gogi (양념고기):

Other than learning about the translation of the term, you may want to know what’s put in the dish before going for this grill arrangement. Basically, yangnyeom gogi or Korean marinated meat which is prepared for grilling contains a mixture of soy sauce and sugar. Many restaurants may go great lengths by including some mirin (a type of alcoholic beverage fermented from rice), minced garlic, and sliced onions in order to make the meat more aromatic and flavorful.
Yangnyeom Gogi (양념고기) – Pork Kind: Yangnyeom Dwaeji Gogi (양념돼지고기)

I discovered this humble barbeque house years ago when I was looking for a matjib (맛집), meaning restaurant that serves delicious food, for my dinner appointment, and the place popped up on top of the list resulted from Naver searching. As of today the grilling house has received the score of 4.85 out of 5 – the rating was equalized from over 3,000 reviewers indicating a good sign of legitness and satisfaction. So, you may want to plan a trip down to Gwanak-gu’s Sharosugil next time, if you are looking for a guaranteed Korean BBQ restaurant.

Meat Options at Gogi Gupneun Saramdeul:

As mentioned, the marinated pork short rib is what you can eat at gogi-gupneun-saram-deul. The dish appears on the menu as ‘숯불양념구이’ and is the most ordered since it is the only grill option that is offered for unlimited refill 무한리필 (read: mu-han-ri-pil). I ordered the selection on my first visit in 2020 and instantly got hooked by its deliciousness and surprisingly low pricing. If my memory doesn’t fail me, it cost slightly less than KW10,000 per person – the offer in which, at the time, was barely found in a barbeque diner in Seoul. Although the price now went up to KW13,900 (as of my visit last week), the place is still my favorite go-to spot in Sharosugil and always has a long wait during dinner prime time.

    What’s on the Menu

Other than its popular pork yangnyeom-gui, gogi-gupneun-saramdeul also provides visitors with a wide variety of unmarinated porks such as Hanyang saeng samgyeop (한양생삼겹 – Hanyang fresh pork belly), kkagttug mogsal (깍뚝 목살 – diced pork neck),and tonhangjeong (돈항정 – pork jowl), as well as a selection of beef including Hanyang sogalbisal (한양소갈비살 – Hanyang beef rib), yangnyeom sogalbisal (양념소갈비살 – seasoned beef rib), and chadolbagi (차돌박이 – thinly sliced brisket).

What Goes Best With the Marinated Pork Short Rib:

Similar to most BBQ restaurants in Korea, the banchan or the side dishes here are served in individual small plates, which can be refilled free of charge at the side dish and dipping sauces self-bar. If you come for the marinated pork highlight, it is proclaimed (on one of the house’s boards) that the seasoned green onion is best to side the grilled morsel with.

And for getting a carb fix, a bowl of cold noodles – 물냉면 (read: mul-naeng-myeon) is considered one of the most popular side meals that your Korean friends would enthusiastically encourage you to try after a course of barbeque. Even though the dish was confusing to me during my first years in the country, however, the more I have, the more I could agree with the many!

    Mulnaengmyeon (물냉면)

If you are not a fan of the chilly, sweet and sour broth of the mulnaengmyeon, you can also ask for a portion of warm, steamy cooked rice as well as a small pot of savory chadol ramyeon (차돌라면), beef brisket simmered in instant noodles. I tried the latter on my last visit and it was very tasty!

How to get to Gogi Gupneun Saramdeul:

The restaurant is located within a walkable distance from SNU station (서울대입구역) of Seoul Subway Line 2. Walking out of exit 1 and keeping straight, then turn right down the third alleyway (before the main roadway intersection). Keep walking for about 3 minutes until you reach a four-way junction. Take the street on your left and walk further for 2-3 minutes, Gogi Gupneun Saramdeul will be at your right hand side.

    Writer’s Note:

Gogi Gupneun Saramdeul is definitely a perfect matjib for dating or for a small group of 3-4. Because of the limited space and their relatively small, round dining tables, they seemed to have a hard time arranging the seats for a bigger party. And if you’d like to beat the dinner crowd (even on the weekday), visit the house as early as 5:00 pm. Once it passes 18:00, the waiting team in front of you can be more than 20, and considering its small seating capacity, this can cost you an hour or two. Also, if you have a Naver account, making a reservation is the best way to avoid the uncertainties altogether.
